The University George Square Campus is located in the centre of Edinburgh just 15-20 minutes walk or a 5 minute bus ride from Princes Street and a similar distance from the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Numerous hotels, B&Bs and student accommodation are located near the venue, most within a pleasant 5 to 30 minute walk through the city. The campus is also well served by taxi ranks, bus stops and walking routes that allow direct connection to the city.

The George Square Campus is centred around the beautiful George Square Gardens and are a five minute walk from The Meadows, a former loch that now provides a huge area of green space at the heart of the city. There are numerous restaurants, coffee shops and pubs within 5 minutes walk of the venues but Edinburgh is also home to award winning and world renowned restaurants as well as quirky historical pubs. Attractions near the city centre include Edinburgh Castle, the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood Palace and the Scott Monument.

Edinburgh is a UNESCO City of Literature and home to the Edinburgh International Festival (9th August – 2nd September) Edinburgh Festival Fringe (3rd-27th August), the largest arts festival in the world and the city has a vibrant cultural life throughout the year. The city hosts festivals throughout the year with the Edinburgh International Film festival (20th June – 1st July) and the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festivals (20th-29th July) of particular interest to OR2012 delegates. The Centre for the Moving Image, Dance Base: the National Centre for Dance, and the Scottish Storytelling Centre are all located in Edinburgh with unique music, theatre, dance, spoken word and film performances taking place throughout the year. Indeed 2012 is the Year of Creative Scotland.

Edinburgh also houses numerous free to access museums and galleries with exceptional permanent collections. The National Galleries of Scotland’s summer exhibitions begin in April, the National Museum of Scotland has an ongoing programme of talks, events and touring collections and the National Library of Scotland’s John Murray Archive Exhibition is accessible year-round. In 2012 Edinburgh will also play home to several Olympic Games related events with the London 2012 Torch Relay reaching the city on 13th June.
